OUTLAST I

The first game in the series, developed and produced by
Red Barrels and released in 2013.

You play as investigative journalist Miles Upshur who has received an email from a whistleblower working for Murkoff at Mount Massive Asylum.

Once he enters the asylum, he finds mutilated bodies and gore, along with freed inmates, referred to as Variants.

He comes across a Murkoff tactical officer, who is impaled on a metal pole. The dying officer warns Miles to leave, and when Miles exits the room, he is attacked by a very large and powerful inmate named Chris Walker, and is thrown through a window and down to the floor below.

Miles wakes from unconsciousness, only to be met by another inmate, a self-proclaimed priest named Father Martin. Father Martin tells him that he has to stay in the asylum as a witness to everything, saying he is his apostle. Miles loses consciousness again.

Miles wakes again, this time alone, and goes to find a way to escape the asylum. He avoids Chris Walker and reaches the security control office, but he is stopped by Father Martin, who sedates him via an injection. As Miles fades in and out, Martin shows him security footage of a seemingly supernatural entity as it tears apart Murkoff's security team. Father Martin brings Miles' unconscious body to the holding cells.

Miles exits the cell, and meets the Twins, who discuss killing him. He continues through the prison block, coming across a decontamination chamber he cannot get through. He follows a trial of blood and writings on the wall to reach a switch for the airlock.

He activates the switch for the airlock, and makes his way through. He finds a keycard and uses it to get into the showers, only to be ambushed by the Twins who have trapped him. He uses a smashed window to climb along the outside to evade them.

Miles reaches the security control for another airlock, but once he activates it, Chris Walker smashes through the glass which causes the airlock to malfunction. Miles escapes the room by going through an air vent, and Chris Walker gives chase. While running, an explosion happens which knocks Miles down to the lower floor of the Prison Block. Cushioned by a pile of gore, Miles continues to run from Chris Walker, and finds an alternate route to the showers. When he goes through, he goes down a hole which brings him to the sewer.

Miles goes through several parts of the sewer before he watches the Walrider pass. He continues on, and reaches a room that has a map of the sewer. Chris Walker jumps down, continuing to look for Miles.

Miles avoids Chris Walker, turning multiple valves and climbs a ladder down to the lower part, where he reaches a flooded area and encounters Chris Walker again. He continues on through the waterway and up to the Male Ward.

In the Male Ward, Miles goes through a series of rooms and vents, coming across a tied up Murkoff employee who screams, alerting nearby Variants to Miles. He is chased by Variants through several rooms, until he reaches a dead end. Through the intercom, a seemingly normal voice tells him to get in the dumbwaiter. However, the person on the other side is another inmate, Richard Trager, who then beats Miles and straps him into a wheelchair. Trager mocks him as he rolls him through the Male Ward, before coming to a stop in a washroom. As he gives Miles a speech, he pulls out a pair of bone shears and cuts off two of Miles' fingers, his left ring finger and his right pointer finger, planning on selling them. Trager leaves, and Miles manages to break free from the wheelchair, and comes across another victim of Trager's, who is tied to a bed. The man starts screaming, and Trager comes and kills him.

Miles goes through a couple of vents, and finds the elevator key. Trager attacks again, but Miles gets to the elevator and enters. Trager tries to enter the elevator from the floor below, only to get stuck between the elevator and the floor, which crushes and kills him. Miles exits using the door in the ceiling of the elevator, and enters the floor that Trager came through.

Miles continues walking, and comes across the cafeteria, which is on fire. He meets the Pyromaniac, who tells him to exit through the kitchens, but Miles goes to activate the sprinkler system instead. He evades Chris Walker and turns the valves to activate the sprinkler system. When he goes through the cafeteria again, the Pyromaniac pushes him and runs through the kitchen doors. Miles exits to the courtyard.

Once outside, Miles finds a shed with a key inside. He continues on, around a large fountain, and finds another shed, which leads him into another room where the Walrider starts towards him. He climbs a ladder outside, and jumps bits of broken roof, goes through a fence with a hole in it, and then into another hole. Miles avoids Chris Walker again, and reaches a place to climb up where he can shimmy along the wall and into another area. He tries to go through an alley, only to be ambushed by Chris Walker. He avoids him, and goes through a different alley and into a hole that Chris Walker cannot fit through, then into a window. This leads Miles to the Female Ward.

Miles sees Father Martin, on the edge where the floor has fallen through. He finds a staircase with arrows drawn pointing up. Once he goes up, and crosses fallen apart sections, he gets to the top where Father Martin tells him to cross from the upper floors.

Miles evades a Variant, and finds 3 fuses for an empty fuse box, which he fixes. A dumbwaiter drops a key down to the laundry room. A Variant breaks into where Miles is, and chases him down to where the key is. He grabs the key and then gets to the top of the ward, where he sees another arrow, which he follows. The next room he enters, the floor falls apart beneath him, sending him down. He continues to follow arrows all the while the Walrider is seen. Miles is then met with the Twins, which he has to evade again. In the room, most of the floor is missing, and Miles jumps from section to section, until his camcorder falls out of his grasp, and down below. He follows it, and enters an office, and finds his camcorder. He then is chased by several Variants until he climbs up lockers and up into a bathroom. Miles is in the room he lost his camcorder in, makes the jump this time, and reaches the Administration Block.

Back near where he started, Miles avoids Chris Walker and is told by a Variant to go to the theater to find a key. Inside the theater, an interview about lucid dream experiments by Rudolf Wernicke is playing. He continues across a ledge into the projector room, finding the key. Miles makes his way back to the elevator, unlocking the gate with the key and following another arrow which leads up. Miles finds his way to the chapel, being let in by the Twins. Inside Father Martin is crucified on a cross, and then is set on fire, burning to death. Miles takes a key, this one for the elevator, and leaves. He reaches the elevator, after avoiding Chris Walker once again, and is lowered down into the Underground Lab.

Entering the lab, Miles is met by multiple dead officers at the front desk, the same ones that Father Martin showed the Walrider kill earlier in the night. Miles continues on, walking through hallway after hallway, only to trigger an alarm, which notifies the Walrider. Miles is chased by the Walrider, until Miles goes through a set of doors and is grabbed by Chris Walker. The Walrider grabs Chris Walker, throws him against the walls, and explodes him from the inside. Miles goes on, coming across a glass wall with Rudolf Wenicke behind it. Wernicke tells Miles that Billy Hope, the current host of the Walrider, must die, which would end the Walrider as well. Further into the lab, Miles comes across Billy Hope in a glass sphere, which is hooked up to many pieces of equipment. Miles closes a valve to Life Support Fluid, and goes to disable the power to the lab. The Walrider appears, chasing Miles. After disabling the power, the Walrider grabs and throws Miles, but Miles gets back up and disables Billy Hope’s life support failsafe. While Miles records Billy Hope’s death, he is grabbed and thrown by the Walrider. He then stumbles through a set of doors, only to be met with Wernicke and many soldiers, who shoot Miles, presumably killing him. Wernicke is heard saying “Gott in Himmel, you have become the host!” Then there is more gunfire, and the sounds of the soldiers being torn apart and killed.

LET'S GOOO

MILES UPSHUR. I love him so much. Through his notes he's shown that while he's harsh, stubborn and cynical, he is incredibly passionate, strong willed and willing to go through hell to uncover the truth and do what he believes to be right. I LOVE HIM.
